PURE GRIT's First Review
Many writers will tell you they don't read their reviews. It's probably wise not to read everything people write about your book on Amazon or Goodreads. But I do pay attention to the professional reviews, which in large part, determine if libraries will stock my book.

PURE GRIT's first review came out from Kirkus Reviews on Christmas Eve. I think it's a good review. You can read it here, and decide for yourself...

To me, the most important sentence in the review is this one: A fine purchase for young adult-and adult-World War II collections that illuminates a previously unexplored aspect of the war.

This reviewer agrees with me that PURE GRIT crosses over to the adult market, meaning both adults and teenagers would enjoy it. It also draws attention to the fact that PURE GRIT tells a story that few people have heard. And that libraries should stock it! Next time you visit your local library, please ask them to order it. Thanks!
What Would You Do...

If you weren't afraid?

As the new year begins I settle on a slogan to help me form a positive habit over the next twelve months. For 2014 my slogan is a question. What would you do, Mary, if you weren't afraid?

I know this isn't an original thought. Do something everyday that scares you, is a similar quote I hear a lot attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt. But often with common sayings we don't pause to consider the meaning.

If I've stopped to think about these sentiments at all, I've discarded them out of hand. I'm not scared of anything. Okay, I am scared of snakes, but I can live with that, and I see no reason to delve into it or sign up for a snake handling class. My life is fine, thank you. I don't need to sky dive or swim with sharks.

But what hit me this week is that the things we are most afraid of are not exotic feats of nerve. They are things very close to us. Things we encounter without straying from our daily routine.

What would you do today,, if you weren't afraid?

It took me less than three seconds to realize my biggest fear.      Read more...
