When the world as you know it crumbles...

Hello ,

I received my copy of PURE GRIT from the publisher Monday. It was an amazing moment to hold the book in my hands, see the brilliant colors of the design and feel the beautiful quality paper of the pages.

I'm humbled to see the finished book, knowing all the people who have helped make it happen.  And so honored so many of you have already purchased it and are writing to tell me what you think.

From my e-mail box...

Donna says, "Thank you for giving me an incredible group of role models and heroes. Their stories were so well-drawn and thoughtfully portrayed that they will stay with me for years to come."

From Al, "I like the way you tell the stories, particularly your use of short, simple sentences; much like the diaries of the noble souls who wrote in small characters on small pieces of paper when time and ink and life itself was starved of all beauty and abundance.

Yet there is a beauty in your narrative because it is the same beauty that remains when life is starved of everything: the beauty of faith and hope and charity, the beauty of courage and determination."

Somebody, hand me the tissue.

By the way, the "official" reviews are coming in, too. Click here to read those.
Staying Strong When the World Crumbles
WWII Nurse treating patient

I love this photo of U.S. Army Nurse Frankie Lewey because it shows her in action, nursing a wounded man. Throughout the battles and the years of their captivity, the nurses stayed true to themselves as nurses and as military women.

This gave them strength when the world as they knew it, fell apart around them.

Thanks to the Association of Library Service to Children for hosting me on their blog this week. This gave me a chance to tell librarians how PURE GRIT can be a resource for them.

Not only will it help them show students a greater diversity in women's wartime contributions, but the book can be used to demonstrate the value of using the raw materials of history to learn about a subject.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, PURE GRIT is worth 100,000! That's right. The book features more than one hundred photos. Click here to read the full post.

My Lousy Morning...
Beautiful snowy day in Spokane
Take two minutes and read this story. My friend writes about a snow day at her house that takes an unexpected turn. It really touched me.

"When I did sit down to begin ticking through a long to-do list, the calendar in my phone beeped a reminder at me. Today is my old high school friend's birthday. I don't know why I say, "my old high school friend." It's not fitting." Read more.
