Hello
,

Happy Veteran's Day Weekend!

As promised--today's Newsletter features a sneak peak at rare historical photos from my upcoming book PURE GRIT.  Go ahead and forward this to anyone you think might be interested.

Next week I'll feature my interview with an an exPOW who credits one of the nurses in my book with saving his leg, and with Emmy Award-winning film director Jan Thompson. Jan's father was one of the POWs shipped to Japan on what came to be known as Hell ships.

PURE GRIT SNEAK PEEK

In anticipation of Veteran's Day, I've posted a sneak peek of my upcoming book on my blog. Remember the excerpt is from an uncorrected proof, so the color is off and the quality isn't perfect. But you'll meet a couple of the nurses featured, and see a bit of how the story begins.

At right is a photograph of Hospital No. 2 where American Army nurses served shortly before American's surrendered the Bataan Peninsula in early 1942. Soldiers fought disease as well as the enemy. From March to April, malaria cases increased from five-hundred a day to nearly one-thousand. Nurses worked while suffering the same ailments as the troops, dysentery, dengue fever, beriberi, all aggravated by the growing malnutrition as food ran out.

The above photo shows Hospital No. 2 army nurses (left) Major Josie Nesbit and (right) Mary Moultrie. Josie's leadership proved critical in keeping the nurses alive during their three years as POWs.  She was one of those rare individuals who acted with both strength and compassion.
