Hello ,

Hoping you have much to be thankful for this week and always. 2014 has been a year of celebration and joy for me with the debut of PURE GRIT.  And it has been a journey of grief following the loss of my brother-in-law Javier.

I'm so grateful that as life takes it's turns, it's ups and downs, there is a quality of beauty that never changes, a depth of presence that is steadfast. If we look for joy, we can find it.

With thanks to Fourth Grade Teacher Kelly Mogk, I've got my slogan for 2015. “If you've not heard it before, the context is simple: go at your own pace, don't compare yourself to others, and do what works for you so that you can make it to the end….It's permission to live my life according to my own beliefs and guidelines, without feeling less than or guilty because I am not in the same place as those around me." At a conference with 65-hundred English teachers, you need to watch your commas. Here's what happened to the guy with the run-on sentence.

With thanks to Tricia Ebarvia’s of the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project:

"Of the many wonderful things I heard during the NCTE conference, one that stood out was when Penny Kittle, in a session on “Literacy for Democracy,” quoted author Stephen King—”I did it for the pure joy. And if you do it for joy, you can do it forever.”

When I first started teaching, I never imagined myself as one of those teachers—the ones who end up spending 30+ years in the classroom. But now that I’m almost halfway to those 30 years, I realize that there isn’t much else I’d rather be doing, especially because there is so much joy to be found in the classroom."

Tricia Ebarvia is a high school English teacher in Berwyn, PA. To see more from her confernce notebook Click here and scroll down to Notes & Quotables
