Author Mary Cronk Farrell
Hello ,

Happy Friday!

I read a couple books over the Memorial Day Weekend. Here's one you'll enjoy if, like me, your a fan of history and rarely told stories.
Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, an American-Lithuanian writer, is the story of a German ship that sank in the Baltic Sea carrying thousands of children. The sinking of the WILHELM GUSTLOFF, is the story of one of the greatest maritime disasters of WWII.

Aboard were 10,582 people, the large majority of them refugees from Poland, Lithuania and East Prussia. Russian torpedoes hit the ship just hours after it set sail in choppy waters, and it sank within 50-minutes.

It was snowing, the temperature was 10 degrees below zero, and ice flows spotted the sea.Only 1,230 people survived. The book has been published in sixteen countries.
News and Links
Last week's newsletter irritated a few readers due to its labor union/environmental point of view, which is fine with me. I do not expect everyone to agree with me. A diversity of viewpoints can spark discussion and learning; working together, people with different perspectives can solve problems in creative ways.

But if you would like to read more about people who are demonstrating against climate change, people who are putting their bodies on the line, check out this article from Humanities Washington, The Necessity Defense: Climate Change and Civil Disobedience...

Still trying to give away an advanced readers copy of my upcoming book Irena's Children. All current subscribers' names were entered in a random drawing and the winner this week is Heidi Steele.

As the rules stated in the beginning, the winner must e-mail me to claim the book before next Thursday, June 9 at 3pm, or an alternate winner will be selected with the same provision.

A number of people wanted to pass on my feature story about the teacher shortage. One mentioning how teachers at her school are discouraged about the profession and counting down the days until classes let out for the summer. Here's that link...
Taking Time Out
I confess I have been taking off writing time to work in my garden this week. Taking my own advice about the Power of Dirt.
Thanks to my neighbor Barbara, for giving me itty-bitty starts for this lettuce back in March.

I like flowers as much as vegetables. And since I have a lot of shade I go for begonias. I take my lunch break with these lush bright colors
Two big ripe strawberries this week--I got one and a squirrel got the other. Snap peas are blooming, and I transplanted my tomatoes in the ground just in time for the hot weather predicted for the weekend.

Thanks for you time!

Have you read a great book? Tell me about it. Have a burning question? Let me know.

Until next week....
