Hello ,

It feels good to be back at my desk this morning, though I have lost something precious and the world will never be quite the same. My mom died a week ago Wednesday. She would have turned 81 on Valentine's Day.
Margaret Mary Cronk 1936-1917
One of the beauties of life is that in the midst of great sorrow, we have the capacity to also find joy.

I found joy in knowing that Mom lived a full and happy life despite her share of the heartache that comes with the human condition.

Mom knew what she wanted and what was important to her--marriage, family and faith--and she dedicated herself fully to this vocation.
You can read more about Mom and her legacy of 65 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren here...

At right, my five sisters and I walk out of St. Peter's Catholic Church one last time with mom by our side. We were so honored to be pallbearers and preform this final service for her.

And the world goes on. Crazy, how that is.

News and Links
I'm honored to report that both FANNIE NEVER FLINCHED and IRENA'S CHILDREN, YOUNG READERS EDITION, have been selected as
Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People.

This is an annual reading list of exceptional books for use in social studies classrooms, selected by social studies educators.

The selection committee looks for books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad  NCSS range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text.

Until next week...

Have you read a great book? Tell me about it. Have a burning question? Let me know.
