Hello ,

This week, my next book moved one step closer to becoming real!

Publishing sometimes seems to move at a glacial pace, so, it is always exciting when I can detect actual progress.

You may remember this project, which is the story of black women who joined the U.S. Army during WWII.

These courageous women volunteered to serve their country fighting for democracy, even though in some states they were not allowed to vote simply because of the color of their skin.

In the Women's Army Corps, they faced discrimination for being both black and women, and both within the ranks and among civilians.

Here's an article about several WACs sent to work in an unheated barracks that had been declared an unfit work space.

Some WACs risked court martial (prison and dishonorable discharge) to take a stand against unfair menial job assignments like scrubbing hospital floors.

Some risked their lives, simply by riding the bus wearing their army uniforms.

Course, they had some fun, too. Shortly after this photo taken at Fort Shanks, a snowball fight broke out.

This week I finished final edits on the text of this book, which is scheduled to be published next fall.

And my editor finalized the photographs, so my next task is to seek permissions to use any of the photos that aren't in the public domain.
One advantage to writing a military story is that many of the photos were taken taken by the Army Signal Corps and are free to use.

But the book has about seventy photos, so no easy task to get all the permissions. I've already written most of the captions, so that will save me some time in this next stage of the production process.

Meanwhile, I am continuing to work on my young adult novel, though at the moment, I seem sort of stalled in the middle. Send good thoughts to keep me moving forward on that.

As always, thanks for you support!

And I'll be giving away a copy of a new book that just hit shelves this month, Bound by Ice, by Sandra Neil Wallace and Rich Wallace.
