Rizal was a prolific writer and blistering critic of

colonialism. His novels sparked fury and fear around the world among members of the powerful ruling class.

His writing proved a catalyst for revolution in the Philippines where Spanish authorities had him arrested, charged with treason and executed December 30, 1896.
