December 20, 2024 Hello , Just a quick note to wish you happy holidays and offer some reading recommendations. No newsletter next week, but you'll hear from me January 3. I'm taking training in resistance and organizing this month and will continue in January leading up to a nationwide event to resist the MAGA agenda. Over the holidays, if you have a few quiet moments to
read, take them! I have a couple recommendations. For the older set, or simply old at heart, you'll love the Thursday Murder Club series. Guaranteed to make you smile! It didn't sound good to me when someone first recommended it, but I'm so happy I found this incredible cast of characters. There was a long waiting list at the
library, so I read the second book first. Turns out I think it's the best of the series, so don't worry about reading them in order.
If you've already discovered the Thursday Murder Club, I'm dying to know what you think. I saw it's going
to be a Netflix series and I made the mistake of looking at a photo of the cast. Of course, they don't look at all like imagine them! So don't do that! Read the books before the series comes out. If you're in the younger set, or simply young at heart, you may enjoy the Kate Burkholder mystery series more. They're crime stories set in Amish country, the main character, Kate is formerly Amish and now the Police Chief in the small town of Painters Mills. No smiles here, in fact the first one is such a graphic crime story, I advise you to skip it and begin with a book later in the series. I've read all 17 of the books written by Linda Castillo.
Breaking Silence
is #3. While the murders in these stories are often vicious, I really enjoy the main character. Kate is a strong woman, principled and deeply committed to the safety of her community, both the Amish and the English. She's all business and often puts her own life at risk for others. Underneath, she has a tenderness she likes to keep well-protected. I also love the group of officers that work for Kate, each is an individual with human strengths and weaknesses. The books are well
researched and I enjoy the Amish characters.
Based on a riveting reading of diaries, memoirs, letters, and interviews of contemporaries, Fighters in the Shadows gives authentic voice to the resisters themselves, revealing the diversity of their struggles for freedom in the darkest
hours of occupation and collaboration.--from the publisher.
Until next year...take care of yourself and love one another.
