I love delving into research and shining a light on women whose courage have shaped our history. Occasionally, I come across a woman on her way to making history.

Paris Harris is such a woman. To reach her dream of becoming the first black woman smokejumper, she faces a long road and a steep climb.

Climate change is raising temperatures across the American West. Snowpacks melting earlier leads to dryer summers and more regions suffering drought conditions.

There's little doubt these conditions will cause extreme wildfire seasons like we've never seen before.

It's frightening to imagine these fires. Imagine jumping into them.

Daring to Leap: Meet Paris Harris

I learned about Paris in Mountain Journal, an internet magazine I started reading after my trip to Yellowstone National Park several years ago.

My first question was how a girl from the Chicago suburbs would end up in Northern Idaho fighting wildfires.

My next question? Why? Why would young woman not only fight fires, but jump into them? Few girls have a back story like Paris Harris.

Mountain Journal interviewed Paris and published such an interesting story about her it's only fair I send you there to read it....
