February 7, 2025 Hello , Update! I've finished the proposal for my next book! It's an exciting twist on the historical women's biographies I've been writing the last ten years. You will meet an extraordinary woman, but this book combines history with neuroscience. Looking forward to telling you all about it soon! Scroll down to News and Links for my #resistance update. This week has been extraordinarily busy, so I took a short cut. Below are several stories I could not have written better myself. Let me know what you think. Long-time subscribers
know of my fascination with the wolves of Yellowstone National Park, a topic where the controversy never ends.
Wolves, Neither Saints nor Sinners...
Look at
this 1909 homestead cabin near the North Fork of the Flathead River in northwest Montana. Right now, I'd like to curl up by the wood stove with a book and enjoy the quiet of the wilderness.
Moose City recreation area, Montana, photo by Diane K. Boyd One woman lived in this cabin for most of
40-years. I clearly remember the 1980s, but if you write for kids, the decade is classified "historical." Diane Boyd clearly played an incredible role in history, though she is not well-known. Long before the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, a pack quietly settled back into the Northern Rockies under their own volition. Diane Boyd was there in the North Fork of the Flathead to document their expanse across the Canadian border into
one of the most remote corners of the Lower 48. She continued to keep track of them for four decades, skiing across frozen rivers with icy torrents looming beneath; encountering grizzly bears and mountain lions alone on her trap lines; and staring into the yellow eyes of a wolf waking from sedation in the back of her pickup.
Yet these weren’t the gravest dangers for a young female biologist in this isolated ecosystem, and much
like the wolves she studied, humans were often the greatest menace. She had to chase drunken intruders off her cabin porch with a rifle, contend with angry trappers, and dodge the heavily laden log trucks barreling down narrow North Fork roads. Continue reading the

wildlife biologist and wolf specialist. “The entire narrative around wolves and their management has no basis; it’s more about managing the symbolism of
wolves.” – Ed Bangs, former gray wolf recovery coordinator. Myth-Busting and the Great Gray Wolf This next article is political, with a few salient points of history to put current events in perspective. The Only Color That Matters is Green
What I've been doing this week...dreaming of planting my vegetable garden. I'm planning to expand it this spring.
#Resistance Report I'm not sharing my activities to get kudos from anyone. I'm not courageous, not telling you what you should do. I just can't stand by. I've talked about my belief in democracy my whole life and it's time to walk the talk. As part of the Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ) National Day of Action, Saturday, February 1st, I met with Spokane City Councilmember Paul Dillon.
Spokane City Councilmember Paul Dillon agreed to sign our Pledge to Protect and Resist. In 59 cities across the country last Saturday
people gathered in solidarity to promote local efforts to resist the Trump Administration's reactionary and authoritarian agenda. Community leaders, elected officials, leaders of faith communities, institutions and organizations signed the SURJ Pledge to Protect & Resist. Learn more and sign yourself here: protectandresist.com. Tuesday, I joined the downtown Spokane march to protest Elon Musk taking over the U.S. Treasury. Read the article here...
Photo courtesy The Spokesman-Review Yesterday, I joined about 60 people trying to visit the office of our congressman. I wanted to get some answers about what he's doing to preserve the rule of law, the constitution and the rights of people in Eastern Washington.
Outside Washington State 5th District Congressman Michael Baumgarnter's Spokane office, Photo courtesy Randall Michaelis, February 5, 2025. Congressman Baumgarntner was in Washington DC, but I was able to talk to one of his local staffers. He assured me the congressman supports the constitution and the rule of law. But he couldn't
tell me anything the man was doing to demonstrate that. We were told the congressman will schedule a town hall meeting in Spokane to address our questions. Until next week...
